The Best Perfume For You [By: Ursula McLean]
You may have been wearing perfume for a very long time or have just decided to try out wearing perfume for a scent that fits you well. How do you find a perfume that will work well for you among the thousands and thousands of various perfumes out there? Do you want a citrus scent? Do you want a flowery perfume? Should you use a perfume spray, lotion or a solid? Would a musky scent be best for you?
What kind of perfume would be best for you? There are so many different kinds of perfume out there, so many different brands, so many different styles, and so many different types of perfume out there to choose from. You will not be dizzied by the perfume aisle any longer after reading this article. You can walk down that aisle with confidence to choose the best perfume for you.
You may have smelled your co worker’s perfume and tried it for yourself only to find that it smells amazing when they wear it, but awful when you do. I would say that it is not you, but it is. We are all different in so many ways. Our body’s natural scents will mix with the perfume and that is the scent that is created. Unfortunately, you may have found out the hard way by buying some perfume that smelled delicious on your friend only to find out it makes you stink. No worries, though. Now you know that you need to find the perfume that works with you! So, in order to find the perfume that would most likely smell the best on you, you need to find a perfume with a particular scent that works well with your own smell to create the scents we dream of. So, here is a list of common and natural body smells and which types of perfumes work the best with them –
If Your Smell Is Neutral: If your natural scent is neutral you are a very lucky person when it comes to finding the best perfume for yourself. You can choose just about any kind of perfume you want to. Since you already smell neutral your perfume won’t have a weird reaction with your body’s smell. So, go out there and try some out!
If Your Smell Is Sweet: If you smell buttery, milky or powdery your smell is sweet. You should stay away from any perfumes that also smell sweet because it will just become overpowering. Try perfumes that smell like flowers, but keep it light.
If Your Smell Is Floral: If you smell like a bouquet of flowers maybe you do not need perfume! I’m kidding, of course. Go for the citrus smelling perfumes because they will compliment your smell the best.
If Your Smell Is Smoky: If you smell a bit like wood that has been burnt you will want to go for perfumes that smell musky and a bit like incense. Amber would be a great smelling perfume for you.
If Your Smell Is Fresh: If your smell is like that of celery or freshly cut lettuce you will want to find perfumes that are sweet smelling with little hints of vanilla in them. They will compliment your smell perfectly.
If you need help figuring out your own body’s natural scent you could ask a very close friend or your spouse. You need to find someone that will be completely honest with you, though. Otherwise you will be wasting your money on a certain type of perfume that could actually make you smell worse. We all have our own natural body scents, but since we are in these bodies we do not usually know what our real scent is. That is why it is vital you ask someone else. If you are too shy to ask someone close to you or just do not want to, go to your local perfume counter and pull a nice, helpful employee aside. Tell them that you need help finding the best perfume for you, but you need help. Ask
them how you can find out what your own natural scent is. Make sure you go in as you would normally dress with no perfume on. Most likely, they will get a good whiff of you and help you find the best perfume to work with your natural smell, instead of against it.
Natural Perfumes [By: Ursula McLean]
Perfume is wonderful, but if you are allergic to it you can’t enjoy wearing perfume or even going to the perfume counter to try some out. You are simply stuck with your body’s natural perfume and your deodorant, which may not have a particular scent to it. The only thing worse than sneezing and sniffling when you are anywhere near perfume is if you have had allergic reactions to perfume on your skin. It can leave red bumpy marks on your skin (like that of a rash) wherever you put it. You might have just said, oh well, I have sensitive skin and just can’t wear perfume.
You do not need to give up. There are plenty of good, talented and skilled people out there making perfumes just for you. There are perfumes for those with sensitive skin and those who are allergic to perfume. You can find perfume that will not make you sneeze or break out.
What you need to look for are natural perfumes. It is now much easier to find natural perfumes with the increase in demand for more natural products of all kinds. Natural perfumes are also great if you are worried about any additives that you can’t even pronounce, let alone know what they are. Natural perfumes can include searching for organic perfumes, organic essential oils, natural essential oils, and more.
Natural Essential Oil Mixed Perfume –
There are some companies that will allow you to mix different essential oils together to get a perfume that you like. They will then dilute that mixture to make it work as perfume for you. There are so many different types of essential oils out there and most of them come from plants and flowers. You can even search and purchase a do it yourself perfume kit online so you can create your own perfume and experiment with different kinds of perfume that you actually make on your own – and it is all made with natural essential oils.
One example of a do it yourself perfume kit is this –
The kit should come with the most common scents of perfume that you would be able to find on store shelves, such as citrus, floral, musk, and sweet. The do it yourself perfume kit should also come with directions on how to mix the ingredients as well as explanations on why you need to mix certain ingredients together to get the perfume you want out of it. Most of these perfume kits will come with five milliliter bottles of the different essential oils so you can mix some of them together to get the perfume you want.
A do it yourself perfume kit will also make a great gift for anyone from those who wear perfume on a daily basis to those who can’t wear perfume because they are allergic to it.
What If You Just Don’t Want To Do It Yourself?
Hey, sometimes we just do not want to experiment with different essential oils and try to make our own natural perfume. You can also buy natural perfume that has already been made for you. However do you know what to look for in a good, all natural perfume? Before you start searching for some natural perfume there are some things that you need to look for first.
Check For These Labels Or Descriptions –
• Natural Essential Oils
• Organic Essential Oils
• Beeswax
• Organic Ingredients
• Wild Crafted Ingredients
• Biodynamically Grown Ingredients
• Bases of 100% Organic Alcohol
Also look for an online company that is proud of the natural perfumes they create. They should have a thorough and detailed description of every ingredient put into the perfume. If there is not, continue on to another website to find a great natural perfume.
The Popularity Of Natural Perfume [By: Roberto Sedycias]
Modern living and political outlooks have paved the way for the natural perfume to become increasingly popular. However, the idea of it has always been around, and until the 1800s when synthetic materials were created, natural perfume was the only option. The synthetics were a breakthrough in modern science, and offered a valuable commodity for perfume makers. It enabled the product to have a longer shelf life and could also create more effects and blends.
Synthetic perfume is still excellent quality, but there is a modern trend for trying to recapture the essence of all things natural; and this includes with perfume. Botanical perfume is created from raw organics and rare aromatics, with natural extraction processes used. The aromatics are obtained through tincturing, enfleurage, infusion and distillation, and then added to a combination of carrier oil and water or a natural alcohol base. These bases are less severe than their synthetic counterparts and so it is less likely to cause an allergic reaction.
Allergies are a common reason why people are turning to botanical perfume. The high levels of pollution have made many people more sensitive and intolerant to many chemicals that would previously have produced no adverse affect. Natural perfume ingredients are in their purest form, and so the absence of chemicals creates less irritants and skin pollutants.
Another reason for the popularity of natural perfume is that it can be used to create a signature blend. In the modern world where mass production is the norm, many people are turning to the unique and rare to recapture a sense of identity. Natural perfume enables this. Firstly, synthetic perfumes are mass produced, and so it is down to the taste of the buyer as to whether they are purchased, whereas natural perfumes can be made bespoke.
These bespoke perfumes are created in relation to the tastes of the buyer, and are available for that buyer only. Many natural perfumeries are opening across the globe, where clients can go in for a whole experience which includes answering questions about tastes to determine a particular classification such as oriental, citrus, marine or floral. Then different base scents are tested, and those liked are then combined to create a signature fragrance, usually stored on a database for future purchases.
The ingredients are also a key factor. Natural perfumes often contain rare aromatics that would be too expensive to use in mass production. Therefore, it can offer a wider variety of fragrances. Another element to consider is the concentration of the blend. Synthetic perfumes have strict concentrations of perfume per alcohol and water base, which must be adhered to. Natural perfumes can step outside of these conventions, and create a strength that suits your requirements. Certain perfume may be based upon aromatherapy and aromacology theories also, to try and help assist with mood and health.
Of course, natural perfume does have its disadvantages also. For instance, the absence of any chemical fixative in the perfume, similar to the preservatives found in food produce, means that it is evanescent or short lasting. The ingredients in botanical perfume may separate also, as they contain no chemicals that bind, but this can be resolved with a gentle shake, so not too much of a problem but worth remembering. Natural perfumes are generally inexpensive and a pleasant change from the norm. Ultimately, however, they need to suit your requirements and needs; so weight the pros and cons and make an informed choice before purchasing.

A Pursuit For The Nose [By: Mike Medwin]
So why buy when you can make your own perfume. Not only will you be able to save some money but you'll get a blast from the pursuit of the perfect perfume.
One of the greatest advantages of making your own perfume is that you don't have to worry about having chemicals and preservatives going onto your skin. Since you're more likely going to work with natural, you don't have to worry about the possible effects of synthetic materials on your body.
However, care should still be taken when using various essential oils. Some people might still have particular allergenic reactions to specific types of oils. It is therefore important to know or be familiar with your own body chemistry first before trying experimenting with blending perfumes.
First, let's differentiate between the various types of perfumes. Basically, a perfume is a mixture of aromatic compounds and diluted in alcohol and water. The amounts of aromatic oils dissolve in a blend determine if it can be called a perfume or a cologne. Arranged from highest concentration of oils to lowest the sequence would be: perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, eau de cologne and body splash.
When we say perfume, the blend of aromatic oils is from 25 to 40%. Eau du parfum, meanwhile, are 15-30% aromatics. Eau du Cologne has even lighter aromatic oil contents. This type of scent usually has around 5-15% aromatic compounds. Toilet water or sometimes referred to as body splash has only 3-5% aromatics. Body splash are ideally used after you take a bath or shower.
When you make your own perfume, you get to choose which solvent you would use to dilute the blend. Available at your disposal are either jojoba or alcohol. Both have distinct differences and benefits. Jojoba is great for perfume blends because it never turns rancid.
When you have created your own perfume blend, it is best that you use the perfume only on your pulse points. Anywhere more and you might overdo the scent. For diluting the blend the traditional way, you use grain alcohol or a high grade proof of vodka. Alcohol makes the blend more volatile. The problem with alcohol is that you have to let the perfume blend evolve. If you don't the scent will smell more like an alcohol rather than a perfume. Usual proportions of alcohol and perfume blend is about three or four ml of the blend combined with five or 10 drops of alcohol.
Making your own perfume should be fun. Don't delve too much on the technicality of blending perfumes. Explore and try to make combinations that are unheard off. You never know, the resulting blend might be perfect to your body chemistry.
Scents and fragrances react differently when applied to your body. Choosing one that fits you is like choosing the right color of dress or the right pair of shoes to wear. Perfumes cannot just be worn arbitrarily. The resulting scent might be catastrophic. That's why you need to experiment more when making your own perfume. Try various combinations of scents until you find the perfect one for you.
When and Why You Should Use Women's Perfume [By: Ursula McLean]
The next most concentrated form of perfume would be the Eau de perfume, with a concentration of 15% to 20%. This has a lower price and thus may be more used than the pure concentrated perfume. You can usually find this in spray form.
Eau de toilette carries a 14% concentration and is actually suitable for both men and women to use. It is less costly than the first two and will often be packaged as a spray.
Eau fraiche has quite a small fragrance concentration and is believed to be more suitable for the warmer climes, since it has less alcohol than the others (practically zero alcohol actually.)
If you analyze women’s perfume, you will note it is composed of three layers with one layer made up of notes (or the ingredients.) When you spray any perfume, you will notice you can smell it at once – the first notes to hit you will be the alcohol in the perfume. Once the alcohol has started to evaporate, the middle notes will be the ones you sense next – these make up the core of the perfume. In fact, the middle notes are the most defining ingredients which will be the ones deposited on your skin once the alcohol evaporates.
To analyze women’s perfume further, try to determine what is the basic ingredient which is what will influence whether that type of perfume is the right one for you or not.
Perfume is categorized as either fougere, fresh, woody, oriental and floral. You need to understand what is the basic ingredient in each perfume that falls into each category so that you know if it will work for you or not.
Why is perfume more correlated as a women’s product than something even men can use? One reason is the common stereotype that women are naturally vainer than men, so they tend to use more products that pamper them and make them feel beautiful. But despite this stereotype, many women are still practical so they pass over the more expensive perfume and choose the less expensive so that they can use more perfume more frequently at less cost to them.
Some manufacturers will offer discounted prices for their products if you purchase them at bigger volume. The only disadvantage with buying products like women’s perfume at bigger volumes is if you cannot easily purchase other perfume if you tire of that fragrance and you want to shift because you may not have enough funds or you are hesitant to invest in more expensive perfume.
The sheer variety of women’s perfumes nowadays is really staggering. You find so many sources creating unique varieties of women’s perfume that it is so hard to make a choice sometimes. Even with help from the sales staff, you may still find it hard to make up your mind. The bad news for manufacturers is, it is this sheer variety which may make it difficult for them to survive – competition means that there is less of the loyal customers to go around and less profits for each one.
That is why many perfume manufacturers get endorsers to vouch for their perfume, like movie personalities and well-known people. Some showbiz people branch out into perfume making and marketing as part of their business strategy too. One unique come-on for women’s perfume are the products that are literally laced with synthetic pheromones which are supposed to make the wearer more appealing to the men surrounding her.
The Pros and Cons of Giving Out Perfumes as Gifts [By: Ursula McLean]
The first and most obvious way could be selecting perfumes based on what you know the recipient likes. This may mean literally bringing over your friend to a perfume retail counter or two and having him or her pick out perfumes as gifts for himself or herself (all on you, of course.) But the problem with this is that your friend may have expensive tastes, so you are placed on the spot and have to pay anyway.
If you are on a smaller budget, you might opt to choose the perfumes as gifts you will be handing over. You should take into consideration how old the recipient is, if the recipient is a he or a she, and the usual type of perfume he or she would choose.
If the exact type of perfume is not available, choose perfumes that would fall into the same category as the original selection. This means if the perfumes as gifts tend to be spring season type of perfumes, then try not to give autumn type of perfumes. This places the odds in your favor that the recipient will appreciate your gift.
It is generally not a common practice to give perfumes as gifts to children – not that they cannot smell what is nice-smelling just like any other human, but because they may not have opportunity to wear perfumes anyway. But some upper class people do like to give their children perfume (maybe to start them out young in the habit, so that they know from an early age how to choose the right perfumes.) Thus, you have young children like young girls who already are quite well-versed in what perfume varieties they like. Maybe for people like that, such knowledge is important to their social standing.
Is it practical to give perfumes as gifts? It would depend how frequently you give perfumes as gifts. If you tend to give fairly frequently and it is tending to wreak havoc with your savings, then maybe you ought to select less expensive things to give. But a small bottle of medium-priced perfume once or twice a year will not break the bank so it is probably safe to give perfumes as gifts in such situations.
You should also make it a point to check for product safety when giving out perfumes as gifts. Many responsible manufacturers make it a point to list the ingredients of their products so that you know what you are placing on your skin. Since many products are easily absorbed into your skin, you really have to check the list of ingredients to see if what you are placing onto your skin is made of safe components. Just because it is perfume does not automatically mean it is safe to use.
Should pets wear perfume as gifts? Some pet owners do treat their pets just like human companions but you need to be careful about what you use on your pets. Pets have their own sensitivities when it comes to some skin care products too. Also, you might be unpleasantly surprised that your pets may not like what you are applying on them. Test a small amount on palm and let your pet smell it first. If you find the doggie shaking its head vigorously and snorting, then obviously using scent of that kind is offensive to the pet. You also do not want your pet licking any product and getting poisoned by it, so be sure your perfume gift is not toxic to your pet companion.
Perfumes as gifts are like a double-bladed sword sometimes – they can please you and please your recipient, or they can offend you and also offend your recipient. So practice caution always.
What Advantages of Wearing Perfume You Can Expect [By: Ursula McLean]
Many women get around the disadvantage of high costs by choosing the less expensive varieties so they can wear perfume more frequently. This gives them one of great advantages of wearing perfume because a good perfume can really lift your mood and make your day go much better than without it – and since you chose the less expensive varieties, that means you will be in a much better mood for many of your days than if you chose a more costly variety.
Some of the less expensive brands may actually sell better than more expensive brands because of the way they are marketed and where. If the perfume is marketed as a part of your daily toilet and hygiene routine, you might be more inclined to purchase it more often and integrate it into your daily life (thus consuming more of it, than the more expensive varieties, which are often marketed as luxury products geared for the high end markets.) There are also more not-so-well-off people in the world than well-off people so it would be more likely for them to purchase mass-marketed perfume than luxury perfume brands.
Women are generally considered as the main market for probably most of the perfume sold in the world today, due to the belief that perfume is more of something women would use. This is one of the more obvious advantages of wearing perfume – it reinforces the image of women as sweet smelling people.
To help them profit more due to an increase in sales, the manufacturers may opt to create cheaper facsimiles of their more expensive products – the cheaper versions may be remarkably similar in scent to the luxury versions so that people will think they are getting practically the same thing but at a more affordable cost. This is a common business strategy that allows manufacturers to maintain a healthy bottom line while still being able to offer quality products to all their customers.
Men are now finding other advantages in wearing perfume – because it also elevates their mood, and may even make them feel more attractive to women. If you are a man who wears perfume, and you constantly get compliments about how nice you smell, that is one thing that would do wonders for your confidence level. And confidence is definitely attractive to many women.
One common form of perfume for men is the daily after-shave (not usually considered a formal type of perfume, but still a perfume anyway because it contains fragrance.) Interesting that many strong-smelling after-shave products are still considered good perfumes even if the partners of the men complain of the scent – but then fragrance is a personal form of expression so the men rule in this respect anyway.
Many men and women opt to use a less expensive type of perfume for daily use, and reserve the costlier ones for their luxury activities (like attending a night at the theater, or a business function.) Though this definitely cuts into their weekly budget, for them it might be an advantage because it is an investment into their personal care system. It also gives people a more pleasant image of them, so that might work to their advantage as well.
Perfume can be considered a disadvantage to people who may have very sensitive skin or certain skin allergies, so it is always wise to test the perfume on a small part of your skin first to see how you react. Dermatologists do this all the time to see how you will react to a certain medication. Even though the percentage of people who do show a reaction may be quite small compared to the larger population, it is always wise to test any product (perfume or not perfume) on a certain patch of skin before buying it. And it is always wise to buy a small volume or amount of any perfume first to see how you take to it over time. If you tire of it, or find something wrong with it eventually, you will be glad there is less waste due to your small purchase. You can even give away the remainder and then just start shopping for a better perfume afterwards.
There are many advantages to wearing perfume and you may agree with them all – but the most important advantage to it is that it can make you feel much better about yourself, compared to going without it.
The Benefits Of Wearing Perfume [By: Roberto Sedycias]
Firstly, the effect of perfume on our brains is not necessarily recognised though the effects are certainly enjoyed. Each scent, whether natural or synthetic, emits molecules which enter the nasal passages and eventually reach the olfactory epithelium. This part of the nose has a vast amount of receptor neurons which are each covered in hairs called cilia. These cilia trap the scent and send a message to the brain which enables a person to recognise the perfume. The ability to smell immediately has a positive impact. This is important as some research has shown that people without a sense of smell have a less happy life than those who can smell; scents trigger emotions and affect our mood.
As a result of this finding, perfume has become as much a science as it has an accessory. Aromatherapy studies the effects of natural botanical perfume ingredients, usually in the form of oils in their purest state. Its looks at the effects upon mood and general well being, and applies the knowledge by improving the perfume in the environment and offering a variety of aromatherapy services aimed at improving people`s lives. Aromacology applies this same approach to any available scent, from flowers to sand, and the findings are currently assisting perfume manufacturers worldwide.
The ingredients used in perfume may improve your concentration and enhance your mood. There is a long list of scents that are said to trigger this stimulating effect. Perfumes that contain ingredients such as ginger, sandalwood and rose are claimed by aromatherapists and aromacologists alike to have a stimulating effect on brain neurons. The increased stimulation aided by the use of perfume assists in many everyday tasks, from more focused studying to extra stamina and energy, balanced weight loss to an improved immune system.
Another benefit to be gained from wearing perfume is that it can relax your mood. Certain scents have aldehydes which have a calming effect on the brain. The perfume oils which have this effect include eucalyptus and citronella. Other scents can act as a form of sedative, aiding restful sleep, which helps reduce anxiety and tension which in turn creates a wealth of health benefits. The most famous of these perfumes include lavender and bergamot, which have been used for this purpose for centuries and in a variety of countries worldwide.
The benefits of perfume are not just highlighted by scientific study. Many psychologists state that humans begin to store information about scents when only a few months old, and that scents affect reactions to people and events more than any of the other senses at this young age. In fact, our taste in smells remains more or less the same whereas tastes influenced by other senses are extremely changeable. This means that we choose perfumes for a reason, either it triggers a feeling of nostalgia or makes us feel a certain way. The perfume chosen also has a social relevance; it tells people something about the wearer, and helps cement their identity. Attraction to another person is influenced by invisible scents known as pheromones, and perfume adds to this. Above all, perfume makes the wearer feel fresh, attractive and more confident; and confidence is a definite benefit.
Perfume In Ancient Greece
The art of perfume making began in the island such as Crete and other Greek colonies. It was brought to the agora or marketplace and sold from stalls. The ancient Greeks quickly began to experiment with them, and created their own extraction techniques which incorporated boiling herbs and flower petals. These methods isolated the required plant ingredients and then perfumes were made by infusing the extracted scents in oils. The process was a simple version of modern techniques but could create as wide a variety of them as can be enjoyed today.
The ingredients were mainly homegrown flowers such as iris and marjoram, roses, lilies, and violets. Herbs and spices such as sage and cumin were also used. Incense and myrrh were seen as decadent and were perfume ingredients reserved for gods until the 4th century when there was a shift in tastes, ideology and availability. Like other ancient civilization, the ancient Greeks imported oriental essences to create more exotic perfumes. However, unlike other civilizations, they kept them mainly for their own use, rather than for export.
Perfume was central to ancient Greek life. It was so popular that the politician Solon temporarily banned the use of it to prevent an economic crisis. It was at the centre of hospitality, wealth, status, daily life and even philosophy. It was seen as erotic, mystical and spiritual. It was linked to beauty which was inextricably linked with divinity. The origins of perfume and perfumery are interwoven with Greek mythology. In Homeric tradition, the Olympian gods taught perfumery to people. The colour and scent of the rose is attributed to events surrounding Venus and Cupid.
Perfume was worn by both men and women and was central to cult worship as it was seen as pleasing to the gods and able to win their favour. It covered the scent of sacrifices during ceremonies, and was used as a good omen for marriage and childbirth. Babies were anointed with it for good health. It was also central to death. Perfumed libations were carried at the front of the funeral procession. Bodies were burned wrapped in perfumed shrouds which were thought to help secure a happy afterlife. Other bodies were buried with containers of it, again as offerings to the gods.
Perfume was also integral to cleanliness, and used in elaborate bathing rituals by both men and women. It was used so widespread that the philosopher Socrates openly disliked and dismissed its usage claiming it made a free man indistinguishable from a slave. Athletes used perfume after exercise for medicinal purposes in the form of balms and unguent oils. This is an early recognition of the possible therapeutic and healing properties that are reminiscent of attitudes towards aromatherapy and aromacology in modern times. Hospitality also required an abundance of perfume as guest`s feet were washed and anointed on being seated. Some wines were also perfumed according to works by Appicius, in the hope that they had medicinal properties.
With the importance of perfume so apparent, it is no surprise that it was stored in bottles shaped as birds an animals, sometimes only a few inches in size. Many are found from around the 6th century BC and are known as plastics. In fact, the perfume bottles are spun ceramics and they commonly adopted a shape which reflected the type of perfume to be contained.
Lekuthos were used for liquid perfume and were slim elegant glass bottles. Aryballes were used for oils and unguents. Alabastron perfume bottles were highly prized, mainly amongst women and it was common for the craftsmen to brand the bottles to mark their craftsmanship, making them even more collectable. As you can see, there are many similarities to modern day attitudes towards perfume.

Picking a new scent is a daunting task. Here’s how to navigate the fragrance counter and leave smelling good.
01 LEARN THE CATEGORIESColognes generally fall into three groups: citrus, green, and spicy. Citrus, which includes scents like lemon and tangerine, is good for men who want a fresh-from-the-shower aroma; Armani Acqua di Gio and Ralph Lauren Polo Blue are classic examples. Fragrances that qualify as green are sweeter—try smelling the fig in Marc Jacobs for Men or the anise in Chanel Allure Homme. Seasoned, leathery Old Spice is the archetypal fragrance in the last category; Obsession for Men is a newer example.
02 NARROW YOUR OPTIONS
Once you know how to talk about cologne, you still have to figure out whether you’d rather smell like orange or leather. The way you dress, and even your skin tone, can affect which fragrances work for you. If your uniform includes jeans and old-school sneakers, for instance, you’re probably better off wearing something citrusy. “If the man looks easygoing and sporty, a spicy fragrance wouldn’t be my first choice,” Gerstner says.
If you favor pinstripes and brogues, a spicier scent is a good option. And if your closet is filled with Dior Homme and Jil Sander, you’ll probably like clean, green fragrances. As for your complexion, Gerstner says, “if you’re the whitest guy on the planet, I wouldn’t run out and get something with incense.” Choose a citrus or green instead.
03 TRY THEM ON
“The average customer is overwhelmed by the choices,” Gerstner says. He prefers to send shoppers home with four to six samples from the category they like best and instructions to spray one on each day for a week until they settle on a favorite. When you’re paying $200 for a milliliter of fragrance, it’s worth the effort. But you can also safely leave the store with a bottle in hand if you’re willing to try on a few fragrances—but no more than four. Put one on the inside of each wrist and one in the crook of each elbow.
04 WAIT
It takes at least 15 minutes for a fragrance to react with your skin and for the heart of it to kick in. Spicier fragrances actually get stronger the longer they stay on your body. “It’s like red wine,” Gerstner says. “You don’t open the bottle and pour it in the glass. You let it breathe.” What you smell after 15 minutes will stick around for only an hour or two, but it’s similar enough to the scent that will last the rest of the day (called the “dry down”) that you’ll be able to judge it accurately.
05 PUT DOWN YOUR CREDIT CARD
In general, a well-made cologne costs between $150 and $200. Inexpensive fragrances have usually been made to be sold in mass quantities and are less complex to make. On the flip side, a scent that’s more expensive than $200 is rarely worth it. Even the priciest ingredients, such as vetiver, iris, and jasmine, shouldn’t cost more than that to bottle.
